I came across a great, recent analysis of OpenClaw's architecture: its hub-and-spoke design seems much more robust than the early buzz implied, despite real security breaches in its first viral wave.
Probably because the main issue was not architecture alone, but rather scale without governance: a new agent paradigm suddenly in the hands of hundreds of thousands of users plugging it into their everyday tools, hence opening a massive attack surface.
Why does it matter? Because agents introduce a new abstraction layer between users and digital systems. And when a new abstraction layer appears, value usually migrates. Historically, this pattern is clear: the OS layer went to Microsoft, the browser layer to Google, mobile OS and app stores to Apple and Google, the social graph to Meta, cloud infrastructure to Amazon Web Services. More recently, ChatGPT's public release in November 2022 triggered a seismic move, forcing deep business-model shifts among established players, across both consumer and enterprise markets.
Seen through that lens, OpenAI bringing in Peter Steinberger—OpenClaw's founder—and Meta acquiring Manus AI in early January 2026, let alone Kimi (Moonshot AI) productizing KimiClaw, look less like isolated events, and more like a race to secure control of the agent layer in the consumer space.
At the same time, Claude Code, Cowork, and Codex App have been making a strong entry into the toolkit of knowledge workers these past weeks. This looks like another signal that the center of gravity is shifting from model access to agent orchestration.
So the next key question may not be "Who has the best model?" but rather "Who controls the agent runtime acting on behalf of the user?"
