Undoubtedly one of the most inspiring and insightful tech events I attended recently was last week's gathering in Clermont, "The Purpose of Tech — AI & Quantum." It was an interesting convergence between quantum computing advancements and stimulating discussions on the broader implications of AI and technology.

Under the inspiring legacy of Blaise Pascal—born in Clermont 400 years ago—a pioneer in probability calculus and algorithmic innovation as well as a bold entrepreneur and philosopher, the event brought together the insights of a quantum computing hackathon and thought-provoking roundtable discussions on AI, automation, sustainability and the future of work.

Throughout his keynote, Etienne de Rocquigny warned us against the dual trap of techno-skepticism and techno-futurism—"Luddites vs. Babel." He urged businesses to rediscover the sense of their raison d'être by unifying purpose, business freedom, and a commitment to uplifting human relationships.

As we explored the outcomes of the quantum hackathon, it became clear that we stand at the crossroads of technological advancement. Pascal's legacy, 400 years after his breakthrough calculator—the Pascaline—served as a guiding light, reminding us that, much like him, we must be both visionary and grounded in our quests.

The various entrepreneurs, senior executives and leaders of the AI and quantum ecosystems, who took turns during the roundtable discussions, invited us to embrace an enthusiastic yet reasoned vision of technology and work. One striking question I remember: if AI supposedly frees me from repetitive work, how can I respond to a Benedictine monk who claims that humble daily labor liberates him?

The illuminating answer we received is the following: the only work that truly sets one free involves four stages—setting a goal, choosing the means, implementing them, and finally contemplating. Too often, contemporary machines trap us in the relentless execution of imposed tasks, for a purpose that remains beyond our understanding. What for? For sure, the hidden "mathematics" of the world around us holds so many technological opportunities—AI and quantum computing are fascinating examples. But it is up to us to harness them in service of meaningful enterprises and humanity.
