Is it "unfair competition," or just the new economics of exposed intelligence?
As reported by Reuters, OpenAI has warned US lawmakers of distillation-related methods allegedly used to extract value from frontier US models. The complaint is almost ironic, considering how early LLMs themselves broke through in part by harvesting vast amounts of the open web—this looks like the sprinkler getting wet.
But that's not the point here. The strategic question is perhaps whether closed frontier models can sustain durable advantage, while inference costs keep falling, open weights models catch up quickly, and distillation becomes standard engineering practice.
This looks like an "Ouroboros" dynamic in the cycle: intelligence exposed through APIs gets observed, compressed, and re-injected into the next generation of models. The system starts feeding on its own outputs. Each loop narrows model-only advantage and shifts value toward product design, distribution, and infrastructure control.
Most technology waves follow the same sequence: innovation, diffusion, commoditization, then value and moat moving up the stack—ecosystem design, integration quality, distribution, workflow embedding.
For my part, I tend to think that durable success in that space may come from combining excellence in product engineering with deliberate openness and interoperability. Apple is a useful historical example: despite proprietary design, MacBooks became widely adopted across tech and design teams, while maintaining strong interoperability through their UNIX-based architecture. Beauty outside, beauty inside.
Anthropic seems to be pushing in that direction—building a high-quality range of models and products, anchored in an interoperable architecture they helped pioneer: MCP, structured tool use, modular interfaces.
Yes, their flagship models remain proprietary. But the strategy appears to go beyond raw model improvement. It's about making intelligence composable, embeddable, and structurally extensible. That combination—strong product engineering, high-quality design and deliberate interoperability—may prove more durable than model supremacy alone.
By contrast, other competing ecosystems built primarily around control—or alliances formed more out of strategic necessity than shared vision—may eventually find that alignment of interests is not the same as alignment of purpose.
